Basically, autism is a disorder characterized by a set of alterations that affect the ability to communicate, while reducing the sphere of interests and activities and damaging cognitive and emotional development. In fact, one of the most widespread misconceptions about autism is to think that these people have an I.Q. above the norm, although this is not always the case.

In this respect, statistics indicate that around 75% of children who are diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder have below-average intelligence or even suffer from mental retardation. Many of these children also have learning problems, show a delay in language and speech and a very low IQ that limits them considerably in their daily lives.

However, there are also some people diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder who have above-average intelligence or who are able to overcome their communication problems. In fact, throughout history there have been some celebrities whose behaviors and manias make us suspect that they have suffered a mild degree of autism or Asperger’s Syndrome.
